Progressive cognitive impairment An essential question is whether or not epilepsy might trigger progressive cognitive impairment. This assertion, which today seems so wide of the reality, maybe serves as a reminder of simply how profound the impression of recent epilepsy treatment has been. Yet a small proportion of individuals with epilepsy do seem to undergo some progressive cognitive impairment and lots of research have tried to define the extent of this. Cross-sectional research are unable to distinguish clearly between the static results of underlying brain abnormality and deficits acquired over time. Longitudinal research are required to correctly investi- Epilepsy 353 gate whether intellectual impairments are progressive and to elucidate their causes. Over 20 such research have now been revealed (reviewed by Dodrill 2004; Vingerhoets 2006).
